Give and Go Green

Every year during move out, Barnard students donate unwanted items (clothing, kitchen supplies, nonperishable foods, etc.) at locations in each dorm to be sorted by student volunteers and donated to local charities. Students are welcome to take any items that have been donated but must put the station back in order after looking through donations. This year, Give and Go Green will donate items to Goodwill, Project Grad Bag, Hour Children, and Columbia's own FLIP, as well as reserving a small portion of donations for a Green Sale during next September's NSOP.

In order to better respect the time of volunteers and maintain safety and order at drop-off locations, there will be some logistical changes this year:

  • Give and Go Green stations will be open 10am-7pm only. Donations outside of these hours will not be accepted.
  • The drop-off station for the quad will be the 6th floor Sulz lounge. Donations left in Sulzberger lobby will not be accepted.
  • Give and Go Green for the Quad will end Friday, May 13. Please arrange to donate items before this date or bring them to other stations.

START DATE:

  • Friday, May 6

END DATE:

  • 5pm Friday, May 13 (for the QUAD)
  • 12noon Wednesday, May 18 (for other drop-off locations)

TIME:
  • 10am-7pm only

LIST OF DROP-OFF LOCATIONS:

  • Cathedral Gardens - 10th floor lounge
  • 110th Street - 7L4
  • Plimpton - TV lounge
  • 616 - TV lounge
  • Elliot - 3rd floor lounge
  • Quad - 6th floor kitchen lounge (ENDS 5PM FRIDAY, MAY 13)

Please respect the time of our ROOTS volunteers and Res Life & Facilities staff by helping to spread the word about these changes. Give and Go Green is our favorite time of year, and we can't wait to work with you to keep our belongings out of landfills and in good hands!

Give & Go Green (Sponsored by the Barnard Eco Reps)

The school year is finally coming to a close, and we know you're starting to think about move-out! We at Barnard EcoReps are thinking about it, too! At the end of every school year, Barnard students create a LOT of waste.

Give and Go Green is our initiative to reduce this waste by instead putting it to good use! Every year we throw out perfectly useful clothes, appliances, books, toiletries, and more because we simply can't keep them over the summer. Instead of giving all of that to the landfill, give it to someone in need! Barnard donates your stuff to a couple of great organizations that you can read about below!

WHEN: Collections will begin on Thursday, May 7th - the end of reading week. Collection sites will be set up in each location with signs to direct you where to put things.

*** THE LAST DAY TO DONATE ITEMS IS WEDNESDAY, MAY 20TH!!!
(And the deadline in the Quad is 5pm on Friday, May 15!!!)

  • WORKING Mini-fridges

Give-N-Go Green (Barnard EcoReps)

It's that time of year again...  GIVE-N-GO GREEN!

  • May 8-16 (& through 9am, May 22 for graduating seniors)
  • Please do *NOT* donate any items after 9am on May 22!  We have groups coming to do pick-ups so please be courteous of the system! :]

For those of you who may not be familiar with this event, GIVE-N-GO GREEN provides Barnard students with an opportunity to donate items that you don't need any more, don't have room to pack, or you would rather not be wasteful and donate to an organization/person who can use it!  Barnard donates your stuff to a couple of great organizations including Rock and Wrap it Up, Goodwill, and Project Grad bag!

As EcoReps, we coordinate GIVE-N-GO GREEN and work in collaboration with Facilities and Residential Life to provide you multiple drop-off locations throughout campus.

Starting today, we will be collecting clothes, appliances, non-perishable food, electronics, partially used toiletries, and other items of the same sort.  All items must be clean, washed, and in good condition as we are donating these to other people.

There will be collection stations in the following locations:

  • Sulzberger Lobby
(only through 5pm on Fri, May 16 only -- items may not be left after that date/time)
  • Elliot Lounge (3rd floor lounge)
  • 616 Lounge
  • Plimpton TV Lounge
  • Cathedral Gardens 10th Floor Lounge
  • 110th Street (area off lobby)

What you can donate:

  • clean, washed clothing, sheets, and towels
  • canned, unopened, non-perishable food stuffs
  • working appliances and housewares
  • usable furniture
  • full or half-used cleaning supplies, toiletries or hygiene products
  • plastic bags

What not to donate (should go in the trash or recycling)

  • anything broken, dirty, ripped, or unusable for other people
  • your old chemistry notes, trash and recycling, etc.

Remember that these things are going to people who need them. THIS IS NOT TRASH!

Past GIVE-N-GO GREENS have generated:

  • 3 full 17ft moving trucks of items donated to the Salvation Army
  • 1 pickup truck full of food donated to the church soup kitchen on 114th & Broadway
  • 15,000 plastic bags to be recycled via Fairway grocery store

If you have any questions about GIVE-N-GO GREEN or want to get involved, email us!!

Volunteer for EcoReps GIVE-&-GO-GREEN

Summer is fast approaching, which means it's time to start thinking about moving out and GIVE-&-GO-GREEN!  For those of you who don't know about GIVE-&-GO-GREEN, it is an initiative organized by the Barnard EcoReps that seeks to reduce the amount of waste thrown away by students at the end of the school year.  Every year, we throw out perfectly useful clothes, appliances, books, toiletries, and more because we simply can't keep them over the summer.

Instead of giving all of that to the landfill, give it to someone in need!  Barnard will collect what you don't want or can't take home and donate it to great local organizations.  Each year we fill up multiple trucks with donations!

The Barnard EcoReps are looking for students who can commit to staying late to help organize this years GIVE-&-GO-GREEN initiative.

Accepted volunteers will be eligible for a FREE HOUSING EXTENSION through Friday, May 18th at 12noon (please note that some students may need to relocate to a different residence hall).  Volunteers will be responsible for keeping donation stations orderly in shifts from May 4th through May 18th, and must commit to being present on May 11th, May 12th, and May 17th.  Additionally, they must also be present for the night of donation organization on May 16th and a full day of work on May 17th, when the donations are collected and loaded into trucks.

If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail us at ecoreps@barnard.edu with your name, UNI, class year, and current room assignment.

Thank you, The Barnard Ecoreps (http://barnardecoreps.wordpress.com/)
