Register for Room Selection!

Registration for Room Selection (for 2013-2014 housing) starts today, Wednesday, March 6 at 1pm.  All students who wish to live in any kind of campus housing for next year must register online at http://barnardreslife.org/roomselection/.

Although registration runs through 1pm on Wednesday, March 13 (and when students register during this time period does not affect their lottery number), there is no reason to wait until the last minute!  Log on and register yourself now!

Students who wish to be part of a group for Room Selection do not have to specify this when they register (students can join a group at any point after they register until they actually select).  So don’t let that keep you from registering right away!

Wondering where you want to live next year?

Thinking about living off-campus next year?

  • Before you decide not to register for Room Selection, talk to the Res Life office first!
  • Students who live off-campus will not be eligible for Room Selection next year.
  • Students who move off-campus may qualify for less financial aid than students who live on-campus.  Students are encouraged to talk to the Financial Aid office before deciding to move off-campus.

Don’t know how Room Selection works?

  • All you need to know for now is:  if you want to live on campus next year, you must register for Room Selection (before 1pm on Wednesday, March 13).
  • Info Sessions about Room Selection will take place after Spring Break (dates & times).
  • Res Life will also table in the Diana and in Hewitt Cafeteria to answer questions (dates & times).

Updates about Room Selection

  • The College has confirmed that all suites in Plimpton next year will be for 6 students (4 singles, 1 double).  See the residence hall floorplans.
  • Thinking about applying for Winter Break Housing next year?  Please note that 616, 620, & Elliott will be completely closed again for the first 3 weeks of Winter Break.  Residents of those buildings who wish to apply for Winter Break Housing will be responsible for obtaining permission to stay in a friend’s room (in an open building) during that time period (more info).

Get ready for Room Selection 2013!

Room Selection (i.e. the Housing Lottery) takes place in the Spring semester.  We encourage you to pay close attention to your email inbox this semester so that you do not miss any important emails about guaranteeing your housing for next year.

Please read below for important upcoming dates / deadlines:

  • New to Room Selection?  Plan to come to an Information Session on March 28, 29, April 2, or 10, 2013.  For more information and a list of all the dates related to Room Selection, please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomselection/calendar/.

  • The order in which students choose rooms & suites at Room Selection is determined by lottery number (generated randomly by class year). Students will be considered rising-Seniors, -Juniors, or -Sophomores based on their anticipated year of graduation (i.e. in 2014, 2015, or 2016).

To see which class year you will be considered part of for Room Selection, please visit http://barnardreslife.org/roomselection/.  If you need to update your anticipated graduation date, please contact the Registrar’s Office (107 Milbank or registrar@barnard.edu) no later than 4pm on Friday, March 1, 2013.

  • Registration for Room Selection will take place online between 1pm on Wednesday, March 6 through 1pm on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 (http://barnardreslife.org/roomselection/register/).

All students who wish to live in campus housing next year will be required to register online (including those who secure a room through a disability accommodation, being an RA or RA pull-in, Columbia Greek or Special Interest Housing, etc).

  • Students with diagnosed disabilities who may need a disability-related housing accommodation (accessible housing, visual strobe fire alarm, etc.) must submit a Disability Housing Request (DHR) no later than 4pm on Friday, February 8, 2013.

Please note that students must resubmit a NEW DHR each year (even if they have previously received disability accommodations in the past).  For more information, please contact Disability Services (http://barnard.edu/disabilityservices).

  • Res Life is exited to announce the creation of a new theme unit for next year, the Social Justice House (advised by Associate Director Frank Cirioni).  Application information will be available in late February.

  • Wondering where you want to live next year?  Check out the online Room Reviews at http://barnardreslife.org/roomselection/roomreviews/.  Submit a new review of your own room by April 12 and be entered in a drawing for an Amazon Gift Card!

  • Tours of the residence halls will be available on Sunday, March 10, 2013.  For the schedule & locations, please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomselection/calendar/#Tours.

Room Selection 2013

As we approach the start of registration for Room Selection, we wanted to provide you with information about 3 changes in policy that could influence your room selection plans for next year.
  • Students who anticipate requesting to be in housing over Winter Break next year should be aware that some residence halls will be CLOSED for most of the break (as part of cutting down on the cost of keeping other residence halls open over break). Students who pick into those residence halls & request to live on campus during that time period would be responsible for finding another student to give them permission to use their room in an open residence hall during the break. For more information (including a list of the residence halls that will be closed), please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomselection/guide#winter_break.
  • Students who sign up for the Guaranteed Wait List (for placement over the summer) will have the same cancellation date as students who pick a space at Room Selection. The cancellation fee will gradually increase over the summer instead of being the full amount right away. For more information, including the cancellation dates, please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomselection/guide#cancellations.
  • Students who pull-in one or more male Columbia students to select as a group at Barnard Room Selection will be required to sign the BC Open Housing Agreement/Contract. If a vacancy opens up within the suite, the members will be responsible for locating another student willing to move into their co-ed suite. For more information, please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomselection/guide#gender_neutral.
As a reminder, registration for Room Selection will take place online between 1pm on Wednesday, February 29, and 1pm on Wednesday, March 7. In order to get a lottery number and be guaranteed a room assignment for next year, you must register during the time period above.

Please note that all students register as individuals (even if you want to be part of a group). You may join a group after you register and can change groups, drop from a group, etc. up until the time you select a room / suite.

Don’t know how Room Selection works? Come to an information session on February 29, Mar 1, 2, or 6!

Wondering where you want to live next year? Check out the online Room Reviews. Submit a new review of your own room by March 30 and be entered in a drawing for an Amazon Gift Certificate!

Tours of the residence halls will be available this Sunday, March 4.

If you have questions about Room Selection, please come to an info session, stop by an info table in the Diana / Hewitt cafeteria, or stop by the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger).

Review your dorm room / Win a $25 Amazon gift certificate

Thanks to feedback from last year's Room Selection survey, Residential Life & Housing has created a Room Review website (i.e. a CULPA for dorm rooms). Hopefully, these reviews will help students to make educated decisions while preparing for Room Selection.

Students are encouraged to submit a review, photo, or video of their room at http://roomselection.barnardreslife.org/ (even if they are not participating in Room Selection). Students may also review rooms they previously lived in.

On April 5, Residential Life & Housing will randomly select 4 reviews and the writers will each receive a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

Information about Room Selection will be available later this month. Dates for Info Sessions, Registration, Selection Days, etc, are available at http://roomselection.barnardreslife.org/calendar/.
