Preparing for Winter Break / End of Semester

As the semester is winding to a close, here is some important info about preparing to leave campus for Winter Break (or move out of the residence halls if you're not returning for the Spring).

BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR BREAK...

• Clean fridges of food that may spoil over break.  Throw out any open food that may attract mice or bugs.
• Wash any dirty dishes, pots, etc.
• Make sure all faucets, ovens, stoves, and appliances are turned off
• Empty all trash cans.  Take bagged trash and recycling to the designated area in your building
• Clean suite kitchens & bathrooms
• Unplug, defrost, and leave the door open to mini fridges only (please leave kitchen refrigerators plugged in and closed)
• Unplug all appliances (alarm clocks, lamps, computers, etc.) to save electricity.  These items can use a lot of energy if left plugged in, even when turned off!
• Take any valuables or necessities with you (computer, jewelry, passport, medications).  You will *not* be able to retrieve items during the break.
• Turn off lights and lock all doors & windows, and lower blinds to conserve heat

ALL RESIDENCE HALLS ARE CLOSED FOR WINTER BREAK

• The residence halls are closed from 9am on Friday, Dec 23, 2016, through 9am on Wednesday, Jan 11, 2017
• Students may NOT enter during this period, unless they are approved for Winter Break Housing or Early Winter Return (so please make sure you take important items with you that you will need over the break!)
• During this time, College staff will check rooms to address maintenance issues / requests.  Any prohibited items will be confiscated.   Any fire safety equipment or windows stoppers that have been tampered with will result in fines & disciplinary action.

IF YOU ARE NOT RETURNING TO CAMPUS HOUSING FOR THE SPRING...

• Please make sure that you cancelled your housing for the Spring!
• You must finish moving out before 9am on Friday, December 23, 2016.  Extensions are *not* available (because the res halls are closing for Winter Break).
• Complete a check-out envelope at your residence hall Front Desk to return your keys (and avoid fines)

Summer Storage Options

As you wind down the academic year, we hope that you are able to find a bit of time to consider your possible summer storage needs.  As a reminder, there is no storage space available on the Barnard campus for students to leave their belongs over the summer.

Barnard has worked with a very reliable and responsible vendor for the last 18 years to provide summer storage services for returning Barnard students.  Once again this summer, Mr. Angelo Reda and the staff at SummerStorage.org will be here on campus to assist you with your packing and storage needs.

The SummerStorage.org team will be on campus from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday May 13th, 14th and 15th.  Angelo and his staff will set up with supplies in one of two locations depending on the weather:

• If it is NOT raining, you will be able to find him and his team just outside of Sulzberger Hall by the steps.
• However, if it does rain on any one of these three days, he and his team will be set up inside Barnard Hall on the ground floor.

They will have boxes, tape, packing supplies and staff to assist you in moving very heavy items.  Further information can be found on their website, www.summerstorage.org.  If you have any questions regarding pricing or accommodations, please feel free to contact Mr. Reda directly via either email (avreda@aol.com) or on his cell phone at 516-729-5169.  He is very familiar with Barnard's campus, the needs of Barnard students and is a pleasure to work with; we know you will think so too!

In order to best serve each student's individual needs, you are encouraged to send an email to avreda@aol.com containing:

• Your LAST Name
• Your Mobile Phone #
• The number of boxes you anticipate needing

By doing so, the boxes will be pre-labeled and ready for you when you arrive to pick them up!

Please note that there are other vendors and if you elect to choose one that comes to your room/suite to retrieve your items, you MUST be present to meet the person(s) at the front desk and must sign them in as a guest.  No vendors will be given permission to go to your room/suite without your presence.

• Please complete a check-out envelope at your residence hall Front Desk to return your keys (and avoid fines)

End of Year Check-Out Deadlines & Move-Out Procedures / Policies

As we approach the end of the academic year, please be aware of the following:

• All Barnard residence halls officially close for the summer at 5pm on Friday, May 16, 2014.
• Students who are not graduating are expected to move out within 24 hours of their last scheduled exam (or by 5pm on Fri, May 16, whichever is sooner).
• Students who are graduating will be required to move out no later than 10am on Thursday, May 22, 2014.

ALL STUDENTS should review the full information about check-out policies & procedures available at barnard.edu/reslife/move-out/.

Topics include:  cleaning your room, check-out procedures, requesting extensions, damage billing, Give-&-Go-Green, summer storage options, returning refrigerators & cable boxes, parking, etc.

Winter Break Housing

Barnard College's residence halls close officially for Winter Break at 9am on Friday, December 21, 2012 and reopen at 9am on Saturday, January 19, 2013.

Note:  The residence halls *do not* close for Fall, Thanksgiving, or Spring breaks (although most College offices, including Health Services and the dining halls, will be closed for all or part of those breaks).

Students may not return to or live in the residence halls over Winter Break UNLESS they have been given permission by Residential Life & Housing and have a valid 2012/13 Winter Break sticker on their ID.  Only students living in the residence halls for BOTH the Fall & Spring semesters may request Winter Break Housing.

The Winter Break Housing Request form will be available online (barnard.edu/reslife/winterbreak/) starting Monday, November 19, and must be submitted no later than 4pm on Friday, December 7, 2012.

Students approved to stay over Winter Break will be billed $400 on their student account ($100 if approved for housing between January 14-18 only).

616, 620, and Elliott will be completely closed between 9am on December 21 through 9am on January 14 (no one may occupy the building during that time).  Residents of those three buildings who wish to apply for Winter Break Housing will be responsible for locating someone to give them permission to use their room (in a residence hall which will be open) in order to be considered for housing over the break.

Give and Go Green

Dear Eco Friends:  It's that time of year again...  Give & Go Green!

For those of you who may not be familiar with this event, Give & Go Green provides Barnard students with an opportunity to donate items that you don't need any more, don't have room to pack, or you would rather not be wasteful and donate to an organization/person who can use it!

As EcoReps, we coordinate Give & Go Green and work in collaboration with Facilities and Residential Life to provide you multiple drop off locations throughout campus.

Starting this week, we will be collecting clothes, appliances, non-perishable food, electronics, partially used toiletries, and other items of the same sort.  All items must be clean, washed, and in good condition as we are donating these to other people.

There will be collection stations in the following locations:

• Sulzberger Lobby (until May 12th)
• 600 W.  116th St.  Lobby (for small items only - larger items go to 616)
• 616 W.  116th St.  Lounge 
• Elliott 3rd Floor Lounge
• Cathedral Gardens 10th Floor Lounge
• 110th Street, Area Off Of Lobby
• Plimpton TV Lounge

Each of these locations will have areas sectioned off for each type of donation.  Please help us to keep everything as organized and as clean as possible and drop off your items in an organized fashion.  

You are also welcome to look through what is at the donation stations and pick up anything you would like as long as you leave the area clean.  This will be happening until May 17th, so please stop by and donate or browse!

All remaining items will be donated to Rock and Wrap it Up, Salvation Army, and Goodwill.  In the past, we have donated truck loads of items and we look forward to doing so again!!

Check Out Information

As we approach the end of the semester, please be aware of the following:

• All residence halls officially close at 10am on Saturday, May 15. Students who are not graduating will be required to have completely moved out by this time.


• Graduating Seniors will have until 5pm on Wednesday, May 19 to complete their move-out.

Residence Hall Check Out for Graduating Seniors

It's never too early to start planning for Graduation and residence hall check-out at the end of the year. The Barnard ceremony will be held on Monday, May 17, and the Columbia ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 18.

The residence hall check-out deadline for graduating seniors will be 5pm on Wednesday, May 19. Extensions are not possible, due to the residence halls being used for Summer & Conference housing.

Students who wish to stay later than 5pm on Wednesday, May 19, may sign up for Summer Housing (application information will be distributed later this month). Please note this would likely require relocation to another room for a summer assignment.

Student who wish to request an extension for observance of Shavuot should contact Residential Life & Housing as soon as possible. Please note that students who receive an extension will be required to move on Friday morning, May 14, to a temporary double room (along with other students in interim housing) in order to facilitate cleaning of the residence halls for Summer & Conference Housing. The cost of the extension will be $100 per night.

If you are planning on graduating later than this May (or summer), we encourage you to update your graduation date with the Registrar's Office as soon as possible. If you are planning on continuing through the Fall 2010 semester (and/or longer) and wish to live on campus, please be in touch with Residential Life & Housing in order to request eligibility to participate in the Spring Room Selection process.

Give & Go Green results

Give & Go Green was a HUGE SUCCESS!  Students, administrators and faculty members donated clothing, food, household goods, etc. to the collection centers located in the residence halls.  Here's a summary of what was collected:

• 3 full 17' moving trucks of items donated to the Salvation Army
  
• 1 pickup truck full of food donated to the church soup kitchen on 114th & Broadway
  
• 15,000 plastic bags to be recycled via Fairway grocery store

The EcoReps worked hard to coordinate and facilitate this extraordinary program.  A special thanks to EcoReps Kirsten Scheu and Aja Hazelhoff for taking the lead on this program.  This was a great cause that enabled us to help the community while further reducing the College's carbon footprint.

Check out information for students withdrawing from Housing at the end of the Fall Semester

As we approach the end of the semester, here are a few reminders for students withdrawing from Housing at the end of the Fall semester.

• The deadline for moving out of your current room is 8pm on Friday, December 19 (reminder: students withdrawing from housing are not eligible to participate in Winter Break housing).
  
  
• To check out of your room, you will need to complete & turn in a Checkout envelope (available at your Residence Hall's front desk), including your key(s). Failure to do so will result in an improper checkout fee of $100 and key replacement charges (approx $30).
  
  
• Please clean your room and return it to its original condition. If you are concerned you may be charged for damages based on your Room Condition Report, please arrange a room inspection with your RA.
  
  
• You must remove all of your belongings when you check out. You may not leave belongings behind in your old room (or common space of a suite); otherwise, they will be removed at your cost. Please note that Residential Life & Housing does not have any storage space available on campus. Many students have used the nearby Manhattan Mini Storage on 107th St.
  
  
• Another student may be assigned to your current room through the Spring Room Change process. If so, you will be provided with her name & email address to coordinate her moving her belongings in the room before leaving for Winter Break.
  
  
• You may not hand off your room/suite/etc. key to anyone who may be assigned to your room for the spring, to a current roommate/suitemate, etc. (THIS WILL RESULT IN A FINE). The key(s) must be returned in your Checkout envelope.
