Summer Storage

As we approach the end of the academic year, we hope that you are able to find a bit of time to consider your possible summer storage needs.  As a reminder, the College is unfortunately not able to provide any storage for returning students' belongings over the summer.

For the past 20 years, Barnard has worked with SummerStorage.org to facilitate storage options for returning students.

The SummerStorage.org team will be on campus from 10am-4pm on Wednesday-Friday, May 10-12, 2017, and will be set up outside of Sulzberger (or inside Barnard Hall if it's raining).

They will have boxes, tape, packing supplies, and staff to assist you in moving very heavy items.  For information about prices and other questions, please visit http://www.summerstorage.org, email the owner Angelo Reda at avreda@aol.com, or call 516-729-5169.

Students who plan to make use of the SummerStorage.org service are encouraged to email the following information to avreda@aol.com as soon as possible:

  • Your LAST Name
  • Your Mobile Phone #
  • The number of boxes you anticipate needing

By doing so, empty boxes will be pre-labeled with your name and ready for you to pick up from them during the date/times above to pack your belongings!

Please note that there are other vendors who provide summer storage services and if you elect to choose one that comes to your room/suite to retrieve your items, you MUST be present to meet the person(s) at the front desk & must sign them in as a guest.  No vendors will be given permission to go to your room/suite without you being present.  A list of some additional summer storage vendors is available online at http://barnard.edu/reslife/services/storage.

Laundry Machine Replacements in the Quad

In conjunction with our on-campus laundry vendor, Tedimatts, Facilities Services is in the process of removing all the washers and dryers in both Reid and Sulzberger Halls in preparation for the installation of brand new washers and dryers.  As soon as the old machines are removed, the rooms will be closed so that Tedimatts and Facilities Services can clean and paint each location.

Sometime next week, after the rooms have been cleaned and painted, brand new front loading washers and stacked dryers will be installed.  Instructions on how to use these machines will be posted in each laundry room.

Please be aware that we will be leaving one room, Sulzberger 3rd floor, open and operational during this transition in order that summer residents with laundry needs have access to do laundry in the quad should the need arise.

Since this will be the only operational laundry room in the quad during this time, we ask that you please be courteous and remove your garments from the machines as soon as your cycle is over so that your neighbors can use the machines as well.  Students with large amounts of laundry to do during this period should use the laundry rooms either in building 600 or in Elliott Hall.

The laundry room on the 3rd floor of Sulzberger will be cleaned, painted and have new units installed as soon as the other floors are fully functional.

Thank you for your patience!

Summer Storage Options

Looking for somewhere to store your stuff over the summer? (because no storage space is available on campus)

The Packing & Shipping Network, a local company, will be on campus (Wed, May 11 - Fri, May 13) for the 15th year providing summer providing storage options for students.

For more information, visit http://summerstorage.org/ or call 516-678-2298.

Please note that Barnard does not recommend CampusBoxes.com because of previous complaints from students. Please also note that if you choose to use any storage company other than the Packing & Shipping Network, you would need to sign in/out any employees as your guests (i.e. they may not walk in and out of the residence halls on their own).

Summer Storage Pick Up for Returning Students

If you used the Packing & Shipping Network (http://summerstorage.org) for your summer storage needs, their staff will be on campus on Sunday, September 5th from 10am - 2pm.  They will set up along Broadway between 116th and 118th streets, right in front of the Main gates. Boxes will be unloaded and stacked in alphabetical order so you will be able to retrieve your box(es) easily.

If you are unable to arrive on campus by the 5th, please designate a friend to pick up your boxes for you. She or he does not need to have your receipt, but does need your full name in order for your belongings to be released to their possession. If you are unable to have a friend serve in this capacity for you, please contact Angelo Reda (516-729-5169) to make special arrangements. Please be aware that if your belongings are not retrieved on September 5, it is likely that your delivery date will be after classes begin.

Should you live in a residence hall that is slightly removed from campus and do not have a method of transport for bringing your boxes there, the Packing & Shipping Network will have one small shuttle car that will be available to transport your items to your residence hall.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Angelo Reda directly at 516-729-5169 or Jody at housing@barnard.edu.  Thank you very much and welcome back to Barnard College!

Barnard Important Information about Swine Flu (H1N1 Flu)

To Students in Barnard Summer Housing:

It has been a month and a half since health officials first became aware of the swine flu (H1N1) outbreak. While the cases in New York City have been relatively mild, the numbers continue to increase and we want to take a moment to caution against complacency. It’s easy to get tired of the updates and the warnings, but as a community, we must stay alert in order to stay healthy.

Here’s what we urge you to do. As always, please practice the kind of good personal hygiene that will prevent the spread of flu, including covering your cough, and washing your hands or using hand sanitizer frequently. Hand sanitizer dispensers are now available all across campus. If you should become ill with flu-like symptoms - fever of 100.4 or higher, with cough or sore throat - please stay in and do not go to work or classes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you seek medical advice from your physician and stay away from others for 7 days after onset of illness or at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer.

In addition, it has become clear that all people who have asthma, diabetes, emphysema, or other chronic illnesses, are pregnant, or are below 2 or above 65 years of age, are at an increased risk of severe illness or complications from swine flu. The NYC Department of Health recommends that individuals with underlying health conditions take even greater precautions and seek treatment with antiviral medication immediately if flu-like symptoms develop. Also, if you have had close contact with someone who has flu-like illness (for example, a member of your household or a suitemate), please consult with your health care provider right away about taking antiviral medicine prophylactically, to reduce the chances of becoming ill.

Finally, in order to effectively monitor our community’s situation, we ask that you inform Public Safety at x4-3362 immediately if you develop flu-like symptoms. You should also contact Public Safety in the event that you need urgent medical assistance.

For more information and updates, visit: http://www.barnard.edu/newnews/health050809.html

We are working hard to keep the Barnard community informed and safe. Thanks for helping us all stay healthy.
