616 & 620 Building Facade Work

We hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer, and we are excited to welcome you back to campus for the 2013-14 academic year!

Prior to your return to campus, we wanted to let you know that facade inspections are currently being performed on both the 616 and 620 W 116th Street Residence Halls.

These inspections are required by a New York City law called Local Law 11.  Enacted by the city after injuries from falling brickwork, this law requires all buildings 6 stories and taller to have exterior wall inspections and repairs every five years.  This law is the reason that scaffolding around buildings and sidewalk coverings are a constant presence across the city.

Barnard Facilities Services has hired a contractor who specializes in building exterior repairs to perform this work.  Facilities hopes for the work to be completed by early October.  The completion date will be dependent upon weather conditions in New York.

The work will typically begin at 8am and conclude by 4pm, Monday through Saturday.  Scaffolding and sidewalk covers have been erected around both buildings.  The work crew will be repelling down all sides of the buildings to check and work on the facades.

We recommend that you, as much as the weather will permit, keep your windows closed and shades drawn while you are at home and the work is in progress.   This simple suggestion will help to minimize the impact of this work on you and your suitemates.

We will provide students with an update after the academic year has begun and if there is a change in the estimated completion date.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
