Holiday Observances / Candles are Prohibited

As the holiday season begins, all of us in Residential Life and Housing would like to send along our best wishes for a successful completion to your semester and for a happy and healthy holiday season.

The holiday season is filled with special occasions and traditions, which have an impact on our entire community. We would like for everyone to be safe in their observance of the holiday season. With this in mind, please be reminded that the possession and lighting of candles in the residence halls is prohibited. We will do our best to accommodate as many observances as possible providing they are safe for the entire community.

For example, this Hanukkah season (December 20-27) one menorah will be lit by Rabbi Yonah (of the Kraft Center/Hillel) in the Sulzberger Hall Lobby at sundown on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (December 20 – 22). Please note that menorahs may not be lit anywhere else in campus housing. With Winter Break starting at 9am on Friday, December 23 (and campus offices closing), please note that menorahs will not be able to be lit in the Sulzberger Lobby or elsewhere in campus housing after the evening of Thursday, December 22.

December Room Change Requests

December Room Change request forms are available to download from http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/december/. Completed forms are due to the Res Life Office (110 Sulzberger) no later than 4pm on Tuesday, December 6.

If a vacancy opens up in your room / suite for the Spring, you may encourage a friend to request the space through a December Room Change Request form or by specifying your room / suite on their housing application (ex. students returning from abroad, readmitted to the College, or commuters wanting to move on-campus). You will need to submit a Roommate / Suitemate Request Form (http://barnard.edu/reslife/forms) mutually requesting your friend, no later than 4pm on Tuesday, December 6.

Note: due to the number of people we need to assign to housing for the Spring, it is not possible to request to “buy out” a double as a single. If your current roommate is leaving housing or receives a room change, you will more than likely receive a new roommate as a result of a December Room Change Request process or have a new student assigned to your room for the Spring.

80 visiting international students are coming to Barnard this Spring from Australia, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Russia, China, South Korea, Ghana, and South Africa. If you have a space opening up in your room / suite and would like to request one of these students, please email housing@barnard.edu.

Winter Break Housing

Barnard College's residence halls close officially for Winter Break at 9am on Friday, December 23, 2011 and reopen at 9am on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

Note: the residence halls *do not* close for Fall, Thanksgiving, or Spring breaks.

Students may not return to or live in the residence halls over Winter Break UNLESS they have received permission from Residential Life & Housing and have a valid 2011/12 Winter Break sticker on their ID. Only students living in the residence halls for BOTH the Fall & Spring semesters may request Winter Break Housing.

The Winter Break Housing Request form will be available online (http://barnard.edu/reslife/winterbreak/) starting Monday, November 21, and must be submitted no later than 4pm on Friday, December 9, 2011.

Students approved to stay over Winter Break will be billed $200 on their student account, regardless of length of stay. Students may request a waiver of the fee by submitting a request at http://barnard.edu/reslife/winterbreak/ (form available now); however, submitting a request does not guarantee a waiver of the fee.

Heat in the Residence Halls

The weather is slowly beginning to turn cold and the heating system in all college-owned residential buildings have been activated (effective 10/1/11 as required by the NYC code).

The heating system (boiler) in your building is set to automatic operation and will turn on to provide heat whenever the outside air temperature falls below 55 degrees. During the heating season (Oct – Apr), we try to maintain interior room temperatures in a range of 68-70 degrees.

In buildings with air conditioning (Sulzberger & Tower, Plimpton, Elliott, and Cathedral Gardens), AC is no longer available when the building is in the heating mode.

Please follow these helpful hints to help conserve heat:

Close all windows to prevent drafts and heat loss. If you are having troubles closing a window or if you feel air entering around a window, please submit a work order or contact the Facilities Office.
Keep radiators clear of furniture, bedding and clothing to allow unrestricted air flow around your radiator. This helps keep warm air circulating and distributes heat throughout the room.
If your room feels cold or a radiator appears not to be working properly, please contact the Facilities Office at 854-2041 (8am-5 pm). After 5pm, please call 854-3362 (Public Safety) to report a cold complaint. A Facilities mechanic will be dispatched to check and address the problem(s).
If you live at 601 W 110th St and your room feels cold or a radiator appears not to be working properly, please contact the 110th St Front Desk or dial 0 on your intercom (facilities concerns are handled by 601 personnel).

Community Safety Inspections (October 1-31)

The Barnard RA Staff will be conducting Community Safety Inspections (CSIs) during the month of October (1-31). Barnard Residential Life & Housing conducts these inspections three times per year to ensure the safety of our community. During these inspections, the RAs will enter student rooms to check for any potential concerns which may pose a danger to the residential community. This commonly includes fire hazards (candles, extension cords, illegal appliances, etc.) and damages to the room that have not been addressed by Facilities staff (leaks, broken windows, etc)

While inspecting rooms, RAs are obligated to address any violations that they observe. Each year, the majority of these violations are a result of students possessing items that are prohibited in the residence halls (i.e. microwaves, space heaters, candles, etc.). Students are strongly encouraged to review the list of prohibited items.

If you happen to have items that are prohibited, please be sure to remove these items immediately by either sending them home or donating them to a local charity. You will want to make sure do this prior to the inspections beginning, as RAs are required to confiscate any prohibited items that they come across. Once an item has been confiscated, it cannot be returned to the student.We would like to thank you for working with us to make our community a safer place for everybody to live.

The time/date you register has no effect on your lottery number, but you must register before the 1pm, Wednesday, March 9 deadline in order to participate in Room Selection.

Apply for Special Interest Housing

Each year, Residential Life and Housing supports a variety of Special Interest Housing options for students. We would love for you to consider applying to be a part of this special community of students!

What is a Special Interest Housing group, you ask? It is an opportunity for you and a group of friends to live together and help create a community that stems from a particular topic or passion that you may have. You would have the opportunity to create programs and events that embrace the interest that you and your group select. Some examples of Special Interest groups in the past have focused on music, food, New York City, diversity, and art, to name a few.

Why be involved in Special Interest Housing? This is a unique opportunity to live with your friends, learn how to plan and implement programs, focus on a topic that you have interest in, and positively impact the community that you live in!

If you and a group of friends are interested in living together next year and would like to help create programs & events around a topic, you may apply to be a Special Interest Housing group for the 2011-2012 academic year.

For example, this Chanukah season (December 1-8) lighting of candles will ONLY be allowed in the Sulzberger Lobby and the Second Floor Lounge in 600. However, if you would like to light your own Menorah, you are welcome to do so in the Kraft Center/Hillel building (606 W. 115th). In collaboration with Rabbi Yonah and with the help of student volunteers, one Menorah will be lit at the following times each night:

December Room Change Request Process

December Room Change request forms are available to download now from http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/december.html. Forms are due to the Res Life Office no later than 1pm on Wed, Dec 8.

If a vacancy opens up in your double or triple, you may submit a request to "Buy-Out" that space (and not get a new roommate). The Buy-Out Request form may be downloaded from http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/december.html and is due to the Res Life Office no later than 1pm on Wed, Dec 8. Otherwise, the vacancy will likely be filled through a room change or by a new spring student.

Please note that a request to buy-out a room is *NOT* a guarantee. Due to the large number of new students to assign for the Spring semester, students in buildings closer to the center of campus (600s, ELL, SUT) will be *far less likely* to get a buy-out than in buildings further from the center of campus (110th St, CG). Students whose top priority is to be in a room without a roommate are encouraged to additionally request a room change to a single room.

Join the Housing Advisory Board

Are you looking for a way to get involved on campus? If so, we have a great opportunity for you!

SGA and Residential Life are looking for new members for the Housing Advisory Board (HAB). The Housing Advisory committee meets weekly with Annie Aversa, Associate Dean for Campus & Residential Life, to bring concerns to the attention of Residential Life & Housing and to provide feedback & assistance in shaping housing policies (like last year's changes to the Room Selection process).

If you are interested in joining the Housing Advisory Board and are free on Mondays from 1-2pm (next semester's meeting time will be determined by members' schedules), please email housing@barnard.edu to let us know that you are interested, and tell us in your email what about this committee interests you. If you are not quite sure if the HAB is for you, feel free to join our open meeting on Monday, November 29 at 1pm. The HAB meets in the Residential Life Office in 110 Sulzberger.

After-Hours Medical Support

We'd like to take a moment and remind you of the resources the College has to help you when you are ill (whether it's the flu, stomach pains, a cut finger, etc). To make sure that you are receiving the best care possible, we ask that all students utilize Primary Care Health Services (PCHS) when they are not feeling well. PCHS is located in the lower level of Brooks Hall, and their hours of operation are listed on their website.

When PCHS is not open (i.e. evening and weekends), please phone the Clinician-on-Call (866-966-7788). The Clinician will ask you a series of diagnostic questions in order to determine the proper care for your illness/injury.

If the clinician determines that you do need to go to the hospital, your RA or Public Safety must be contacted to help you get to the hospital via an ambulance or Public Safety vehicle. In order to help you navigate the hospital, a Residential Life & Housing staff member will either escort you or meet you at the hospital.

Host a Prospective Student Overnight, Oct 24-25

The Admissions office is hosting a wonderful event for prospective students, the Barnard Bound Program. This is a great chance for you to help a prospective student learn why Barnard is such an amazing place to go to school.

Admissions needs student volunteers to host a prospective student on October 24-25th. They are expecting about 75 students, with about half of them coming from out of state! The student volunteers will spend the day with the prospective students on that Sunday, which will include fun activities around the city. Each volunteer will be paired with a student to serve as their host. The prospective student will stay the night with their host (the prospectives will be bringing sleeping bags with them).

Crane outside Plimpton Hall, 10/14

Attention Plimpton Residents: Please be advised that on Thursday 10/14/10, Clear Channel, a cell phone provider, will be installing new mobile phone communication equipment on the roof of Plimpton Hall. This will involve having a crane, parked on 121th Street, lifting steel beams and communication equipment up over the building and assembling it on the roof. This work is scheduled for Thursday 10/14/10 from 8 am to 4 pm.

The weather is slowly beginning to turn cold and the heating system in all college-owned residential buildings have been activated (effective 10/1/10 as required by the NYC code).

The heating system (boiler) in your building is set to automatic operation and will turn on to provide heat whenever the outside air temperature falls below 55 degrees. During the heating season (Oct – Apr), we try to maintain interior room temperatures in a range of 68-70 degrees.

In buildings with air conditioning (Sulzberger Hall, Plimpton Hall, Elliott Hall and Cathedral Gardens), AC is no longer available when the building is in the heating mode.

Please follow these helpful hints to help conserve heat:

Close all windows to prevent drafts and heat loss. If you are having troubles closing a window or if you feel air entering around a window, please submit a work order or contact the Facilities Office.
Keep radiators clear of furniture, bedding and clothing to allow unrestricted air flow around your radiator. This helps keep warm air circulating and distributes heat throughout the room.
If your room feels cold or a radiator appears not to be working properly, please contact the Facilities Office at 854-2041 (8am-5 pm). After 5pm, please call 854-3362 (Public Safety) to report a cold complaint. A Facilities mechanic will be dispatched to check and address the problem(s).
If you live at 601 W 110th St and your room feels cold or a radiator appears not to be working properly, please contact the 110th St Front Desk or dial 0 on your intercom (facilities concerns are handled by 601 personnel).

Community Safety Inspections (October 1-31)

RA Staff will be conducting Community Safety Inspections (CSIs) during the month of October. Residential Life & Housing conducts these inspections three times per year to ensure the safety of our community. During these inspections, the RAs will enter student rooms to check for any potential concerns which may pose a danger to the residential community. This commonly includes fire hazards (candles, extension cords, illegal appliances, etc.) and damages to the room that have not been addressed by Facilities staff (leaks, broken windows, etc).

While inspecting rooms, RAs are obligated to address any violations that they observe. Each year, the majority of these violations are a result of students possessing items that are prohibited in the residence halls (i.e. microwaves, space heaters, candles, etc.). Students are strongly encouraged to review the list of prohibited items at http://barnard.edu/reslife/policies/community_safety_inspections.html.

If you happen to have items that are prohibited, please be sure to remove these items immediately by either sending them home or donating them to a local charity. You will want to make sure do this prior to the inspections beginning, as RAs are required to confiscate any prohibited items that they come across. Once an item has been confiscated, it cannot be returned to the student.

Two new common areas in the Quad

Dear Quad residents,

I hope this email finds you well and staying dry. I am writing to let you know that there are now 2 great additional communal spaces for you to use!

Brooks TV Room: This is located on the first floor of Brooks (to the left of the Front Desk). There are comfy couches and a flat screen TV and DVD player. Cable from Time Warner will soon be installed. This is a non-reservable space that will always be open for you to use. Feel free to use this as a place to relax, watch TV or to study.

Webber Lounge: This is located on the first floor of Reid (walk past the Brooks TV Room - all the way at the end of the hall and turn the corner). This is a space that is used for classes and College sponsored reservable events (programs/events/gatherings). There is a large table in this space that makes for a great study location. Feel free to use this space when it is not be used for a class/event. If an event is not taking place and the room is available for you, the door will be open/unlocked and you are welcome to use this space until a scheduled event takes place. There will only be a few events scheduled each day, so you will have a lot of access to this great space.

BCIT visiting suites in 600, 620, and Plimpton on Thur, Sept 16

BCIT staff will be entering suites in 600, 620, and Plimpton (2A, 3B, 4C, 5D, 6A, 7B, 8C, 9D, 10A, 11B, 12C, 13D, 14A, & 15B) this Thursday, September 16.

You do not have to be present, as they will have a master key (and will lock the suite upon leaving).

They will be inspecting the Wireless Access Points that are mounted in the hallways of the suites (and/or installing new WAPs) in an effort to improve the wireless internet access in the buildings.

Fall Room Change Request Process

If you would like to request a room change, please visit http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/ for information about the Fall Room Change Request process. Completed request forms (available to download online) are due to the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger) no later than 4pm on Tuesday, September 14.

Students who submit a Room Change Request form are expected to inform their roommate(s)/suitemates(s) of their request, in order to give them an opportunity to either submit a Room Change form of their own or to recruit a new roommate/suitemate. Residential Life & Housing will not notify students if their roommate/suitemate submits a request form.

Please note that the spaces available for room changes are extremely limited. We cannot guarantee that students who apply will receive a room change through this process. Students who are not able to get a room change during the Fall Room Change process are encouraged to reapply during the December Room Change Process (due to more rooms being available for the Spring due to students leaving to study abroad).

Priority for room changes is both by class year and/or for students who received an assignment from the Wait List. Please note that "buying out your room" (paying the single room rate to keep a double to yourself) is NOT an option for the Fall semester.

WHAT IF THERE IS A VACANCY IN MY ROOM/SUITE OR MY ROOMMATE/SUITEMATE GETS A ROOM CHANGE?

You will more than likely be assigned a new roommate/suitemate. If you would like to recruit a new roommate/suitemate, they should submit a Room Change Form requesting your room/suite and you should submit a Roommate/Suitemate Request form (available at http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/) to the RL&H Office no later than 4pm on Tuesday, September 14, mutually requesting them. The names and signatures of all roommates and/or suitemates must be on the form. No late forms will be accepted. Also, please note that not all applicants will receive a room change (so your roommate/suitemate may not get a room change and create a vacancy).

If a space remains open in your room/suite after the Fall Room Change process is completed, you must continue to keep this space open and ready for occupancy at any time. Vacancies may be used later in the semester for emergency/temporary room changes.

Summer Storage Pick Up for Returning Students

If you used the Packing & Shipping Network (http://summerstorage.org) for your summer storage needs, their staff will be on campus on Sunday, September 5th from 10am - 2pm. They will set up along Broadway between 116th and 118th streets, right in front of the Main gates. Boxes will be unloaded and stacked in alphabetical order so you will be able to retrieve your box(es) easily.

If you are unable to arrive on campus by the 5th, please designate a friend to pick up your boxes for you. She or he does not need to have your receipt, but does need your full name in order for your belongings to be released to their possession. If you are unable to have a friend serve in this capacity for you, please contact Angelo Reda (516-729-5169) to make special arrangements. Please be aware that if your belongings are not retrieved on September 5, it is likely that your delivery date will be after classes begin.

Should you live in a residence hall that is slightly removed from campus and do not have a method of transport for bringing your boxes there, the Packing & Shipping Network will have one small shuttle car that will be available to transport your items to your residence hall.

ACs and Window Fans not permitted

Summer Residents: As the temperature heats up and you begin to enjoy your summer in the Residence Halls, I would like to remind you that air conditioners (portable or window units). As much as we would love for you to have
them, the electrical systems cannot support the additional usage. Also, fans may not be places on or in windows / sills, due to the possibility that they would fall out and hit someone/something.

Please note that any units found will be immediately confiscated and not returned and that you will be fined.

Summer Storage

As many of you arrange your summer class, work and vacation schedules you may be wondering about summer storage. While Barnard College does not have space in order to offer any on-campus storage options, we have been working with Angelo Reda and his Packing & Shipping Network for thirteen years with great success!

The dates on which The Packing & Shipping Network will be on campus to provide our students with packing supplies and storage options are:

Wednesday, 5/12 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
Thursday, 5/13 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
Friday, 5/14 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

Angelo and his workers set up just outside of the Sulzberger Hall entrance on sunny days and inside either the Sulzberger or Barnard Hall Lobby should it rain. They provide boxes, packing tape, moving items and much more!

Information regarding rates, dates and FAQs will be available shortly at http://www.summerstorage.org. If you have specific questions that are not addressed on the website, please know that he can be reached on his cell phone at (516) 729-5169. 2010 Census Information

In accordance with the US Department of Commerce, the Residential Life & Housing Office will be responsible for the distribution and collection of the 2010 Census survey. Our office will assist Census Enumerators in collating a Census form and return envelope for each of you. The Residential Life staff will distribute the surveys to you on either Thursday, April 1 or Friday, April 2, 2010 by either handing it to you directly or sliding it under your bedroom door.

The form itself should take you less than five minutes to fill out. We ask that you complete the form, place it in the return envelope provided, and place your sealed envelope in the drop box at your building's front desk - it's that simple!

Residence Hall Room Tours (Sunday, March 7)

As we gear up for Room Selection in April, are you wondering what the different residence halls are like? Take a tour this Sunday, March 7!

Please have your Barnard ID to show to the front desk staff of each building and wait in the lobby for a tour guide. Since we depend on students to volunteer their room/suite for the tours, not all room types/configurations are able to be shown.

Summer Housing Applications

Applications for 2010 Summer Housing at Barnard are now available online at http://barnard.edu/reslife/summerhousing/.

Housing is available for Summer Session 1 (May 23 - July 2, 5pm) and/or Summer Session 2 (July 5 - August 13, 5pm). May & August Interim are available only for students with Spring and/or Fall room assignments in Barnard housing.

The deadline for Summer Housing applications is 4pm on Friday, April 30. Late applications will be accepted only if space is available.

Note: Residential Life & Housing does not grant approvals for College-Subsidized Summer Housing and cannot answer questions regarding eligibility. If you will be working for/with an office/program that you believe may qualify you for College-Subsidized Summer Housing, please speak to your employer.

Residence Hall Check Out for Graduating Seniors

It's never too early to start planning for Graduation and residence hall check-out at the end of the year. The Barnard ceremony will be held on Monday, May 17, and the Columbia ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 18.

The residence hall check-out deadline for graduating seniors will be 5pm on Wednesday, May 19. Extensions are not possible, due to the residence halls being used for Summer & Conference housing.

Students who wish to stay later than 5pm on Wednesday, May 19, may sign up for Summer Housing (application information will be distributed later this month). Please note this would likely require relocation to another room for a summer assignment.

Student who wish to request an extension for observance of Shavuot should contact Residential Life & Housing as soon as possible. Please note that students who receive an extension will be required to move on Friday morning, May 14, to a temporary double room (along with other students in interim housing) in order to facilitate cleaning of the residence halls for Summer & Conference Housing. The cost of the extension will be $100 per night.

If you are planning on graduating later than this May (or summer), we encourage you to update your graduation date with the Registrar's Office as soon as possible. If you are planning on continuing through the Fall 2010 semester (and/or longer) and wish to live on campus, please be in touch with Residential Life & Housing in order to request eligibility to participate in the Spring Room Selection process.

Thanks to feedback from last year's Room Selection survey, Residential Life & Housing has created a Room Review website (i.e. a CULPA for dorm rooms). Hopefully, these reviews will help students to make educated decisions while preparing for Room Selection.

Students are encouraged to submit a review, photo, or video of their room at http://roomselection.barnardreslife.org/ (even if they are not participating in Room Selection). Students may also review rooms they previously lived in.

On April 5, Residential Life & Housing will randomly select 4 reviews and the writers will each receive a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

Special Interest Housing Suite Applications (due Feb 22)

Spring Room Change Requests

Room Change Request forms are now available on the Res Life website. Please note that this will be the last opportunity to request a room change for the academic year (except in emergency situations).

If you wish to request a room change, please submit a completed Room Change Request form to the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger) no later than 4pm on Thursday, January 28.

If you'd like to recruit a friend to a vacancy in your suite/room, please submit a Roommate/Suitemate Request Form. That person will also need to submit a Room Change Request form asking to move to your room/suite. Both forms must be submitted no later than 4pm on Thursday, January 28.

If there is a vacancy in your double or triple room, you may submit a request to "Buy Out" that space (and not get a new roommate). Water shut off in 600 / 616 / 620 / SUH / PLM on 12/29 & 30

The Office of Facilities Services has contracted American Pipe and Tank to clean the domestic water tanks in Altschul, Sulzberger, Plimpton, 600, 616 & 620 during the winter break (12/29 & 30). This work, which is required by City code, will involve the emptying of the building water supply and the scraping and sanitizing of the tank interior. Science lab sinks, kitchen and bathroom fixtures will not be functional during the interval that the tanks are empty. This service disruption will typically last only a few hours as indicated in the included schedule.

12am - 3:30pm -- Altschul
7am - 11am -- Sulzberger Hall
7am - 12pm -- Plimpton

Wednesday 12/30
8am - 12pm -- 616 W 116th St

Holiday Observances / Candles are Prohibited

As the holiday season begins, all of us in Residential Life and Housing would like to send along our best wishes for a successful completion to your semester and for a happy and healthy holiday season.

The holiday season is filled with special occasions and traditions which have an impact on our entire community. We would like for everyone to be safe in their observance of the holiday season.

With this in mind, please be reminded that the possession and lighting of any candles in the residence halls is prohibited. We will do our best to accommodate as many observances as possible providing they are safe for the entire community.

For example, this Chanukah season (December 11-19) lighting of candles will ONLY be allowed in the Sulzberger Lobby. In collaboration with Rabbi Yonah and with the help of student volunteers, one Menorah will be lit at the following times:

Friday, December 11: 4-4:30pm
Saturday, December 12 - Thursday, December 17: 5-5:30pm
Friday, December 18: 4-4:30pm
Saturday, December 19: 5-5:30pm

110th St cable modem outage

Yesterday (Thursday, November 19th), Time Warner Cable experiences a problems with a damaged "node" that caused a neighborhood-wide Road Runner cable modem service outage. They report that the problem has now been fixed. Residents of 110th St with cable modems, however, need to follow the reboot instructions at http://www.barnard.edu/resnet/roadrunner.html in order for their modem to receive a signal and connect to the internet.

If you continue to have problems with your cable modem after following the reboot instructions, please contact help@barnard.edu for troubleshooting.

Spring Room Change & Buy Out Request Forms

Spring Room Change request forms will be available to download from http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/ starting Mon, Nov 23. Request forms will be due no later than 1pm on Thur, Dec 3. If you are granted a room change, you must be willing to stay until the end of exam week (10am on Thur, Dec 24) to complete your room change before Winter Break starts.

If a vacancy opens up in your double or triple, you may submit a request to "Buy Out" that space (and not get a new roommate). Buy Out Request forms will be available to download from http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/ starting Mon, Nov 23. Otherwise, the vacancy will likely be filled through a room change or by a new spring student.

If a vacancy opens up in your room/suite, you may encourage a friend to request the space through a Room Change Request or by specifying your room/suite on their housing application (i.e. students returning from abroad, readmitted, etc). You will need to submit a Roommate/Suitemate Request Form (http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/Roommate_Suitemate_Request_Form.pdf) mutually requesting your friend, no later than 1pm on Thur, Dec 3.

40+ visiting international students will be coming this Spring from Denmark, Italy, China, South Korea, and Singapore. If you have a space opening up in your room/suite and would like to request one of these students, please email housing@barnard.edu.

Winter Break Housing Requests (due Dec 21)

Barnard College's residence halls will close officially for Winter Break at 10am on Thursday, December 24, 2009 and reopen at 9am on Saturday, January 16, 2010.

Students may not return to or live in the residence halls over Winter Break UNLESS they have received permission from Residential Life & Housing and have a valid 09/10 Winter Break sticker on their ID. Only students living in the residence halls for BOTH the Fall & Spring semesters may request Winter Break Housing.

Winter Break Housing Request Forms will be available to download from the Res Life website (http://barnard.edu/reslife/winterbreak/) on Monday, November 23 and must be submitted no later than 1pm on Monday, December 21.

Students approved to stay over Winter Break will be billed $100 on their student account, regardless of length of stay. The fee will be waived for the following students only: seniors, international students, athletes competing over Winter Break, and/or students participating in approved workshops the last week of break (for the length of the workshop only).

Permission may be granted for the following reasons:

You are a Senior (Seniors still MUST submit the request form to receive permission & get a WB sticker)
You are working for a Barnard/Columbia office over winter break
You are conducting research with a faculty member
You are working at an internship in the city
You are an international student or have a conflict with an international flight
You are an athlete whose team is in practice and/or competition

If you are NOT a Senior or an international student, you will be required to provide documentation w/ your request form (ex. a memo on letterhead from your employer, printout of your international flight itinerary, etc).

The following reasons will NOT be approved:

You want to attend a fabulous New Year’s Eve party in the city
You want to bring your friends to the city for vacation
Your domestic flight home leaves after the check-out deadline
Your parents can’t come on the scheduled check-out day to pick you up
Your bedroom at home is now a guest room
You scheduled a vacation flight out of a NY airport and want to stay over
You will not be in housing for the Spring semester (or were not in housing for the Fall semester), ex. students going abroad for the Spring or graduating in February

Please note that students with approval to stay over Winter Break are limited to a maximum of one (1) guest at a time during Winter Break (other Barnard students who did not receive permission to stay during Winter Break do count as guests).

What a great time for a break! As you plan for the Fall Academic Holiday (Friday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 3, 2009), please read below for information about office closings, etc:

All residence halls will remain open throughout the break; however, please note that all College offices (including Residential Life & Housing in Sulzberger) will be closed on Tuesday, November 3 for Election Day, and will reopen on Wednesday, November 4.
Primary Care Health Service and the Columbia Health Services will be closed on Tuesday, November 3. If you have a medical emergency please contact the Clinician on Call at 866-966-7788 or go to the St. Luke's Emergency Room for Urgent Care.
Hewitt Dining Hall will be closed after lunch on Friday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 3. Hewitt will reopen for Late Night Service on Tuesday, November 3 at 8:30pm to 11pm. Java City will close at 3pm on Friday, October 30 through November 3; it will reopen on Wednesday, November 4, at 8am.
Student Mail Services (Altschul mail room) will close at 6:45pm on Monday, November 2, and will be closed all day Tuesday, November 3. The mailroom will reopen for regular hours on Wednesday, November 4.
The Barnard Library will be open regular hours during the break.
There will be a residential life staff person on call during the entire break period. You can contact the staff person on call through the front desk of your residence hall.

Your opportunity to request a room change for the Fall semester has arrived! Students may download & print the Room Change Request form at http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/. This is your only opportunity to request a room change until the Spring Room Change Request Process (forms for which will be available in late November).

Students who submit a Room Change Request form are expected to inform their roommate(s)/suitemates(s) of their request, in order to give them an opportunity to either submit a Room Change form of their own or to recruit a new roommate/suitemate. Residential Life & Housing will not notify students if their roommate/suitemate submits a request form.

Priority for room changes is both by class year and/or for students who received an assignment from the Wait List. Please note that “buying out your room” (paying the single room rate to keep a double to yourself) is not an option for the Fall semester.

WHAT IF THERE IS A VACANCY IN MY ROOM/SUITE OR MY ROOMMATE/SUITEMATE GETS A ROOM CHANGE?
You will more than likely be assigned a new roommate/suitemate. If you would like to recruit a new roommate/suitemate, they should submit a Room Change Form requesting your room/suite and you should submit a Roommate/Suitemate Request form (available at http://barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/) to the RL&H Office no later than 1pm on Monday, September 21, mutually requesting them. The names and signatures of all roommates and/or suitemates must be on the form. No late forms will be accepted. Also, please note that not all applicants will receive a room change (so your roommate/suitemate may not get a room change and create a vacancy).

If a space remains open in your room/suite after the Fall Room Change process is completed, you must continue to keep this space open and ready for occupancy at any time. Vacancies may be used later in the semester for emergency/temporary room changes and/or relocation of the healthy roommates of sick students.

Removal of in-room phones from Cathedral Gardens

After an evaluation of the campus telephone system and a review of usage statistics, the College has decided to remove the in-room telephones from the suites at Cathedral Gardens (217 Manhattan Ave).

Please note that CG has a video intercom system in each suite connected to the front door of the building, which allows for visitors to contact their host and ask that they come down to the front desk to sign them in.

In place of the in-room telephones, MINS will be installing additional emergency phones (which connect directly to Barnard Public Safety) in parts of CG that do not already have these phones.

Residents who wish to set up telephone service in their room may contact Verizon to install a landline. Alternatives include using a cellphone and/or using internet-based telephone services like Skype or Magic Jack.

Barnard Important Information about Swine Flu (H1N1 Flu)

To Students in Barnard Summer Housing:

It has been a month and a half since health officials first became aware of the swine flu (H1N1) outbreak. While the cases in New York City have been relatively mild, the numbers continue to increase and we want to take a moment to caution against complacency. It’s easy to get tired of the updates and the warnings, but as a community, we must stay alert in order to stay healthy.

Here’s what we urge you to do. As always, please practice the kind of good personal hygiene that will prevent the spread of flu, including covering your cough, and washing your hands or using hand sanitizer frequently. Hand sanitizer dispensers are now available all across campus. If you should become ill with flu-like symptoms - fever of 100.4 or higher, with cough or sore throat - please stay in and do not go to work or classes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you seek medical advice from your physician and stay away from others for 7 days after onset of illness or at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer.

In addition, it has become clear that all people who have asthma, diabetes, emphysema, or other chronic illnesses, are pregnant, or are below 2 or above 65 years of age, are at an increased risk of severe illness or complications from swine flu. The NYC Department of Health recommends that individuals with underlying health conditions take even greater precautions and seek treatment with antiviral medication immediately if flu-like symptoms develop. Also, if you have had close contact with someone who has flu-like illness (for example, a member of your household or a suitemate), please consult with your health care provider right away about taking antiviral medicine prophylactically, to reduce the chances of becoming ill.

Finally, in order to effectively monitor our community’s situation, we ask that you inform Public Safety at x4-3362 immediately if you develop flu-like symptoms. You should also contact Public Safety in the event that you need urgent medical assistance.

Give & Go Green was a HUGE SUCCESS! Students, administrators and faculty members donated clothing, food, household goods, etc. to the collection centers located in the residence halls. Here's a summary of what was collected:

3 full 17' moving trucks of items donated to the Salvation Army
1 pickup truck full of food donated to the church soup kitchen on 114th & Broadway
15,000 plastic bags to be recycled via Fairway grocery store

The EcoReps worked hard to coordinate and facilitate this extraordinary program. A special thanks to EcoReps Kirsten Scheu and Aja Hazelhoff for taking the lead on this program. This was a great cause that enabled us to help the community while further reducing the College's carbon footprint.

Senior Option

In recent years, Barnard has offered a "Senior Option," which allowed Seniors on financial aid to apply those funds toward rent for an off-campus apartment. The Senior Option was created as a response in years in which the College had a shortage of vacancies in campus housing for students on the Wait List after Room Selection and for new students.

After evaluating our current housing stock and the number of projected First-Year and Transfer student enrollments, we have determined that the Senior Option will not be offered for the 2009-2010 academic year.

If you chose a room for the 2009-2010 academic year during this year's Room Selection process and wish to cancel it in order to move off-campus, you have until May 15 to do so without incurring the $1000 cancellation charge. If you do decide to move off-campus, we encourage you to discuss your individual circumstances with the Financial Aid office, as changing to commuter status will affect the amount of financial aid you may be eligible for and/or receive.

Reporting of Heat Problems

Please be aware that students DO NOT have to wait until Facilities Services processes work orders that are related to heat complaints. If a heating issue continues, please call for quicker service (see below).

The heat is on and set to operate automatically. As outside temperatures drop, the boiler reacts in kind and heats the building. Facilities will have HVAC Mechanic check radiators to ensure they are working properly over the winter break.

Should your room be inordinately cold and you suspect your heating unit is not fully functional, please phone in your temperature concerns to Facilities Services (212) 854-2041 and after hours to the Security Dispatcher (212) 854-3362. An HVAC Mechanic will be dispatched to your room immediately, day or night. they will also check to ensure all windows are closed tightly to prevent cold air infiltration.

Tips: Do not block radiators with furniture. Keep windows securely closed. Never use a space heater. The buildings have heat sensors detecting temperatures; space heaters fool those sensors indicating the heat in the building is satisfactory. If you or someone you know has a space heater, the building may be much colder due to its use.

600 W 116th St / Local Law 11 Updates

Residential Life and Facilities Services has recently met with the architects and contractors who are guiding the Local Law 11 work on 600 W. 116th St, and we are pleased to let you know that the scheduled completion date for the work being done on the facade of the building is December 22. The sidewalk bridge is scheduled to be removed on December 29. These dates are a bit delayed because of recent rain and cold weather, but the project should be concluded and everything back to normal by the time you return from winter break.

Check out information for students withdrawing from Housing at the end of the Fall Semester

As we approach the end of the semester, here are a few reminders for students withdrawing from Housing at the end of the Fall semester.

The deadline for moving out of your current room is 8pm on Friday, December 19 (reminder: students withdrawing from housing are not eligible to participate in Winter Break housing).
To check out of your room, you will need to complete & turn in a Checkout envelope (available at your Residence Hall's front desk), including your key(s). Failure to do so will result in an improper checkout fee of $100 and key replacement charges (approx $30).
Please clean your room and return it to its original condition. If you are concerned you may be charged for damages based on your Room Condition Report, please arrange a room inspection with your RA.
You must remove all of your belongings when you check out. You may not leave belongings behind in your old room (or common space of a suite); otherwise, they will be removed at your cost. Please note that Residential Life & Housing does not have any storage space available on campus. Many students have used the nearby Manhattan Mini Storage on 107th St.
Another student may be assigned to your current room through the Spring Room Change process. If so, you will be provided with her name & email address to coordinate her moving her belongings in the room before leaving for Winter Break.
You may not hand off your room/suite/etc. key to anyone who may be assigned to your room for the spring, to a current roommate/suitemate, etc. (THIS WILL RESULT IN A FINE). The key(s) must be returned in your Checkout envelope.

Cleaning of Sulzberger, Elliott, and Plimpton heaters over Winter Break

Facilities Services will be checking and cleaning the heating/cooling units in Sulzberger, Sulz Tower, Elliott, and Plimpton over the winter break (December 20th, 2008 to January 20th, 2009).

Whether you intend to be here or not, you MUST remove all belongings and/or furniture that may restrict or block access to your heating/cooling unit prior to 5pm on December 20th. We ask that you make every effort to keep this area clear for the duration of the break or until a Facilities staff member services your unit.

To expedite this process, our Facilities staff will be working on this project during both day and night. Therefore, rooms that are NOT on Residential Life & Housing’s approved list for Winter Break may be entered in the middle of the night. Winter Break Housing Requests

Barnard residence halls will close officially for Winter Break at 10am on Saturday, December 20, 2008 and reopen at 9am on Friday, January 16, 2009.

Students may not return to or live in the residence halls over Winter Break unless they have received permission from Residential Life & Housing and have a valid Winter Break sticker on their ID.

Winter Break Housing Request Forms will be available from the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger) starting Monday, December 1. The request forms must be submitted no later than 12noon on Wednesday, December 17.

Permission may be granted for the following reasons:

You are a Senior (seniors still must submit the request form to receive permission)
You are working for a Barnard/Columbia office for part/all of the winter break
You are conducting research with a faculty member
You are working at an internship in the city
You are an international student or have a conflict with an international flight
You are an athlete whose team is in practice and/or competition

All non-seniors will be required to provide documentation w/ their request form (ex. print out of an email from their job supervisor, etc).

The following reasons will not be approved:

You want to attend a fabulous New Year’s Eve party in the city
You want to bring your friends to the city for vacation
Your domestic flight home leaves after the check-out deadline
Your parents can’t come on the scheduled check-out day to pick you up
Your bedroom at home is now a guest room
You scheduled a vacation flight out of a NY airport and want to stay over
You will not be in Housing for the Spring Semester (or were not in Housing for the Fall Semester), ex. students going abroad for the Spring or graduating in February

Public Safety patrols in the residence halls

Residential Life & Housing would like to inform all residence hall students that beginning tonight, uniformed Public Safety Officers will begin doing rounds on individual floors of our residence halls a few times each day. We welcome the Public Safety staff into our residential community and hope that you will feel comfortable to introduce yourself to the Officers if you see them on your floor.

Should you need to call Public Safety for assistance, one of the Officers will then be dispatched to you, and they will also keep Residential Life staff informed of any problems or concerns they encounter. It is important that all residential students serve as an escort whenever you have a guest in the building. If Public Safety Officers come upon someone who may not be a student, they will ask clarify who the individual is and where they belong.

All members of our community are responsible for helping to maintain safety at all times. We encourage you to contact Public Safety if you need assistance, notice anything in the residence halls that is not as it should be, or if you encounter a situation of concern to you. Residential Life staff are also available to assist, and welcome your calls.

Siblings or family members under 13 years old may not enter the residence halls unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times and may not stay in the residence halls overnight.
Siblings or family members who are 13 – 16 years old may not enter the residence halls without a parent or legal guardian and/or stay overnight in the residence halls unless a Minor Permission Form has been submitted to and approved by the Residential Life & Housing office.

Quad 4th Floor Laundry Room

Greetings Residents of the 4th Floor,

As you may know, there was recently a flood in the laundry room (near the Sulzberger elevators) on your floor. Our Facilities Staff have worked hard to rectify this problem and the laundry room is anticipated to be operational again beginning this Friday (10/24).

The problem in the laundry room was due to the pipes. The plumber has replaced the pipes and put in a system that will allow the water to flow more efficiently. Additionally, the damaged dry wall has been replaced in the laundry room and the carpets outside of it are being professionally steam cleaned.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding. I'm glad that the problem will be fixed soon and hope that it hasn't been to inconvenient.

Room Change Forms available (Due Thur, 9/25)

Room Change Request forms are now available (PDF download) on the Residential Life & Housing website (barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/). This will be your one chance to apply for a room change prior to the Spring Room Change Request process in December.

If you'd like to apply for a room change, please submit the request form to the RL&H Office (110 Sulzberger) no later than 12noon on Thursday, 9/25.

WHAT IF THERE IS A VACANCY IN MY ROOM/SUITE OR MY ROOMMATE/SUITEMATE GETS A ROOM CHANGE?
You will more than likely be assigned a new roommate/suitemate. If you know someone specific who is interested in moving into that vacant space and submits a Room Change Request form requesting so, you should submit a Roommate/Suitemate Request form (available at
barnard.edu/reslife/roomchanges/) to the RL&H Office by 12noon on Thursday, 9/25. The names and signatures of all roommates and/or suitemates must be on the form. No late forms will be accepted. Also, please note that not all applicants will receive a room change (so your roommate/suitemate may not get a room change).

Residence Hall Windows

Residential Life & Housing has received several questions about windows in the residence halls.

Please know that window stoppers are installed in the windows of the residence halls as a safety precaution (these prevent the window from opening more than approximately 6-8 inches). Window stoppers are installed in many NYC apartments and college campuses to provide an extra measure of safety for the residents.

Please ensure that you do not remove or tamper with the window stoppers in your window(s). Any student that is found to have done so will be subject to disciplinary action and fined a minimum of $100.

First-Year-Focus Best Dressed Space Contest

Storm Precautions

All local weather forecasts have indicated that our area will experience thunderstorms from Friday afternoon through late Saturday as the remnants of Hanna reach the NY area. The forecast also includes periods of heavy rain and high winds.

Please know that the Facilities staff are already preparing our campus for this nasty weather, and there are a few things you can do to minimize the impact on you, and save you from having to be outside in the rain:

If you are in need of any medication, please call-in your refills for pick-up tomorrow morning.
If you or your suitemates are in need of any specific food, make a trip to your grocery store of choice before tomorrow afternoon.
Close your windows during periods of rain and heavy winds. If it is too warm in your room, crack your window open rather than opening it all the way to avoid getting your personal items and the inside of your room soaked. If possible, have suitemates open their windows just a crack as well to allow a cross breeze in your rooms.
If winds become heavy, please do not sit next to your window.
Make sure that you have NO items in your window or on the window sill that can fall outside or inside and cause damage or injury.
If you are using your computer during bad weather, make sure you are saving your work frequently - just in case we lose power for any period of time.
If you are traveling, please give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination - subway and bus schedules may run behind during times of heave rain.

Residential Life, Public Safety and Facilities will all have staff on campus and able to respond to any issues that may arise. Have a good weekend and stay safe and dry!

Cot / Vacuum / TV rentals in the Quad

Room (and Suite) Condition Reports

To non-First Year Students:

You are probably familiar with the Room Condition Reports (RCR) and Suite Condition Reports (SCR) that Residential Life & Housing uses. The RCRs and SCRs are used to determine if a student caused damage to the room at the end of the year. Any new damage that was not originally on the RCR/SCR when the student moved in is charged back to the student(s) at the end of the year.

You will have until Tuesday, September 9th to meet with your RA to view and sign your RCR and/or SCR. When you meet with her, your RA will enable to you compare your RCR/SCR to your room and you will be able to note any damages that our staff may have missed when completing the form. You MUST arrange a time with your RA by 9/9/08 to do so, or else you will be unable to verify the condition of your room and will be responsible for the RCR/SCR as is.

Important Information About Your Computer Use at Barnard College

As a new academic year begins, and we are all settling into new routines, we want to bring to your attention a serious matter that is all too often not given a second thought until it is too late -- the illegal downloading of music off the Internet.

According to U.S. copyright law, it is illegal both to upload and download copyrighted music, pictures, software, or written text without permission. In other words, even if you never download a single song off the Internet, but merely upload, say, legally purchased songs to a file-sharing program, you can still be found in violation of the law.

And the penalties are severe. Criminal penalties for first-time offenders can be as high as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. Civil penalties can run into the many thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees. The minimum penalty is $750 per song.

Since 2007, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has increased its efforts to monitor peer-to-peer file sharing of copyrighted music on college campuses, and the College has, in fact, been receiving an increasing number of "settlement letters," identifying the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of students whom the RIAA believes have unlawfully downloaded copyrighted music. These letters offer to settle legal claims without litigation for a sum of money. If the individual does not settle, or does not respond to the letter, the RIAA brings a lawsuit against the student.

Legal action brought by the RIAA is a private matter between the student and the RIAA, and the College cannot advise you on the proper response should you receive such a letter. You are urged to consult with legal counsel of your own choosing who is knowledgeable about copyright law in order to determine how to respond.

The most effective way to avoid a claim of copyright infringement is just to not download or share any copyrighted content unless you are certain that you have the owner's permission. It is simply not worth the distraction, worry, legal fees, fines, and risk of criminal penalties.

Facilities Services Notice to All Students

Welcome back!

This has been an exciting and busy summer for your Facilities team. We have been repairing, painting, cleaning and generally ensuring that everything in your room is in working order. Unfortunately, in some buildings, we ran out of time and a few items may still require work. We encourage you to submit a Work Order for any necessary repairs. We will make a determined effort to address your request(s) on a timely basis.

Residents of 600
This summer, two major renovation projects were begun at 600 W 116th St, and will continue through the fall. New windows were installed in all the student rooms, and half the tenanted apartments. Work will continue on replacing the tenants’ windows into the end of October. Local Law 11 repairs were begun and are still in progress on the 116th St façade and Northeast corner. We ask that students with rooms facing 116th St please keep their windows and blinds closed from 9 am – 4 pm to help prevent dust from migrating into rooms. This exterior repair work is expected to be completed by the middle of October.

Residents of 616
A major renovation project this summer has transformed the entrance and elevator lobbies of the building. New lighting, flooring, painting and tack boards have been installed. Many rooms have been painted and bathroom tiles grouted. In September, renovations will continue with a new project to repair the sidewalk and entrance steps in the front of the building.

Following completion of Local Law 11 facade work this past June, we discovered that the courtyard wall required additional work to prevent water infiltration. Therefore, the Local Law 11 work will continue until the necessary repairs have been completed. We ask that students with rooms facing the courtyard keep their windows and blinds closed from 9 am – 4 pm to help prevent dust from migrating into rooms. This final item of project work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Residents of Sulzberger Hall
All residents of Sulzberger Hall should be aware that Local Law 11 exterior repairs are still in progress on the building’s Broadway façade. Repair work was suspended during move – in week but will resume again on Tuesday 9/2, 9 am – 4 pm.

All students with rooms facing Broadway are asked to keep their windows and blinds closed from 9 am – 4 pm to help prevent dust from migrating into rooms.
